Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil

Never has a simple informational book had such a profound impact on my daily life.

I heard an interview with the author and thought it sounded interesting. It was around the time oil olive specialty shops started to pop up.

This book was such an eye opener!

Anyone geared toward healthy eating is aware of the benefits of olive oil vs. canola or peanut oil. But the $8 bottle you are buying at your local grocery store is not what you think it is.

Tom Mueller walks us through the olive oil industry, and you’ll learn that it is as corrupt and dirty as the crude oil industry.

But don’t be alarmed – yes, olive oil is still good for you and you should be using more of it. WAY WAY more of it. Wait until you learn how much olive oil the Greeks consume per capita compared to Americans. Amazing. Now the Mediterranean diet makes sense!

This book will also raise your awareness of how to identify quality olive oil. You might have to start buying your oil online after reading this like I did, so beware.

“It says what every oil oil (label) says: 100 percent Italian, cold-pressed, stone ground extra virgin….”

He shook his head, as if unable to believe his eyes.

“Extra virgin? What’s this oil got to do with virginity? This is a whore.”

It was a very easy read. I’m pretty sure I slurped it down in one long evening.

I’ve now purchased it for about a dozen people whenever I find someone who tells me they are starting to pay more attention to olive oil.
